Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Check while you tan
It’s the most common type of cancer in the UK, with an estimated 1 in 7 women diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. Early detection is key to a strong chance of recovery, which means checks and exams on a regular basis are essential.
During your fake tan routine is an ideal time to check your breasts for any changes or abnormalities. Keep reading for our guide on what to look out for.
First things first, know your normal. Make sure you regularly check in with yourself so you’re familiar with what’s normal and healthy for you. For example, you might have one breast slightly bigger than the other, or notices differences during your period. Becoming well acquainted with your body will make spotting anything unusual a lot easier.
Ideal times for checking your boobs are in the bath or shower, or while performing a beauty ritual like body moisturising or fake tanning. Look in the mirror while doing this to give you a better view from different angles. You should raise your arms then put them by your side as you check.
Look out for:
- Change in size or shape of your breast
- Change in the appearance or texture of your breast skin, e.g. dimpling, redness
- Any new lumps, swelling, thickening or bumps in the breast or armpit
- Discharge from either of your nipples
- Change in nipple position, e.g. pointing differently or being pulled in
- A rash; crusting, scaly or itchy skin on or around your nipple
- Pain or discomfort in one breast, particularly new pain that does not go away
If during your check you spot anything that’s abnormal for you, flag it with your GP as soon as possible. While lots of breast changes can occur for harmless reasons, it’s important to rule out breast cancer for your health and peace of mind. The sooner cancer is detected, the greater the likelihood of successful treatment.
